The Montana State University Bobcats hockey team kicked off their season in style with an impressive 4-1 victory over the University of Denver Pioneers on Friday night at Ressler Ice Rink. The Bobcats came out strong, dominating the game with a total of 59 shots on goal compared to the Pioneers’ 17 shots.
The Bobcats wasted no time getting on the board, with forward Duke Cherpeski leading the charge with two goals in the game. The team’s offense was firing on all cylinders, creating numerous scoring opportunities and putting pressure on the Pioneers’ defense throughout the game.
Although the Bobcats couldn’t convert on their two powerplay opportunities, their solid defensive play and goaltending by Nikolai Wallery, who made 16 saves on 17 shots, helped secure the win. The Pioneers’ lone goal came from #32 Iain Mirilovich, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bobcats’ strong performance.
Special recognition goes out to Hayden Smeaton, the Pioneers’ goaltender, who faced an impressive 59 shots and made 55 saves to keep his team in the game.
Overall, it was a fantastic start to the season for the Bobcats, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive prowess. The team will look to build on this momentum as they continue their campaign in the ACHA. Congratulations to the Bobcats on their well-deserved victory!
