About the
Program
Montana State Hockey · MSU Bobcats · ACHA D2
Hard work is a daily commitment. In the gym, in the classroom, on the ice. We believe that that hard work is valuable, driving students to be disciplined, responsible, and professional in their academic and athletic pursuits.
Playing at this level while carrying a full course load is not easy. The discipline it takes to do both well is a fundimental aspect of the program.
We invest in professional coaching, nutrition, and strength training so our players can handle the load. Hockey and school are both demanding. We set our players up to handle both.
History
Founded in 1998, Bobcat Hockey grew from late-night games against neighboring schools into a nationally-ranked ACHA program. Three conference championships. Five Nationals appearances.
The program is established as a student club called the Hellcats, playing against surrounding schools. The goal was simple: affordable, accessible hockey. Late-night ice times, a short schedule, no formal staff.
When the team joined the American Collegiate Hockey Association in 2008, they made the switch official — dropping the Hellcats name and representing Montana State University as the Bobcats for the first time.
In 2015 the program nearly folded. A group of dedicated students refused to let it die and brought in BAHA Hockey Director Dave Weaver to lead a full rebuild. New coaching and management staff, updated branding, a proper schedule. The Bobcats went 14 and 10 in that first season back.
Back-to-back MWCHL Championships and multiple Nationals appearances headlined a remarkable stretch. The 2024–25 season was the program's best yet, finishing second at the National Tournament — the highest finish in MSU Hockey history.
The program continues to invest in infrastructure, staff, and player development. The goal is a national title and every day we get a little bit closer.
Ice
Gallatin Ice is located at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, 10min from campus, it is where the Bobcats play their home games. The facility plays a central role in the region’s growing ice sports scene and is currently undergoing major upgrades to become a year-round, world-class arena for the Gallatin Valley.
